From Grandma’s Cross Stitch to Modern Crochet: My Creative Journey
1/18/20262 min read
Some of my earliest and most cherished memories are tied to thread, fabric, and the gentle guidance of my grandmother’s hands. At just five years old, she taught me how to make my very first cross stitch. In that quiet moment, sitting beside her and learning stitch by stitch, she unknowingly planted the seed of creativity that would grow with me throughout my life.
Creativity ran deep in my family. Our family business was rooted in upholstery and interiors, where fabric, texture, and craftsmanship were part of everyday life. I spent time as a child watching my father carefully upholster furniture, transforming worn pieces into something beautiful and new. Seeing his patience, precision, and pride in his work taught me to value quality, intention, and the comfort that well-made pieces bring into a home.
As I grew older, crafting became both a creative outlet and a source of calm. I explored different techniques and materials, always drawn to the rhythm of working with my hands. Along the way, I tried my hand at jewelry making, which led me to open my Etsy shop, Adorntonia. That chapter taught me invaluable lessons about design, creativity, and sharing handmade work with others.
Life, however, also brought profound loss. I experienced the heartbreak of losing my mother, father, and sister—losses that forever changed me. During some of my darkest moments, I found myself returning to yarn and hook. Crochet became my therapy. Stitch by stitch, it gave my hands purpose while my heart found space to grieve, process, and slowly heal.
About ten years ago, crochet fully entered my life—and it instantly felt like home. The repetitive motion, the softness of the yarn, and the act of creating something tangible brought peace when words often failed. Crochet allowed me to blend my grandmother’s first lesson, my father’s craftsmanship, and my own journey of healing into a practice that feels deeply meaningful.
Each piece I create carries intention, patience, and love. The seed my grandmother planted, the artistry I watched in my father’s hands, and the resilience shaped through loss all live on in every stitch.
Today, as a wife, a mom, and a passionate maker, I create pieces that blend tradition with modern style—cozy blankets, delicate crochet earrings, and thoughtfully crafted home décor. My flamenco dance background also inspires my work, adding rhythm, movement, and expressive energy to each design.
Stitch Therapy Studio was born from this journey—honoring my family, my creative roots in upholstery and interiors, the loved ones I carry with me, and the healing power of handmade. Every piece is created with care and intention, because I believe handmade items carry comfort, connection, and meaning.
Thank you for being part of my story and for supporting handmade. My hope is that when you bring one of my creations into your home, you feel warmth, peace, and the love woven into every stitch.
Dedication
This journey is lovingly dedicated to my grandmother, Maria, who planted the seed of creativity; my parents, Antonia and Richard, whose craftsmanship and love shaped my hands and heart; and my sister, Nora Lee, whose memory continues to inspire every stitch.
